Moleben for a Mother before Giving Birth

Below is a Moleben (Intercessory Prayer Service) for expectant mothers preparing to give birth; it can also be said during birth-giving by friends and relatives. It is based on a general moleben to the Mother of God, with added prayers approved by the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate in 2022.

It is a reader's service. Where it is said by a family or other group of people, the "Senior Reader's" parts are said by the head of the family or the person appointed to lead the service. Where the moleben is prayed by an individual, all the parts are said by that individual.

There are also prayers included below for an expectant mother (or to be said by an expectant mother). These are shorter than the moleben and can be added to regular prayers. They are taken from prayer services to the Icon of the Mother of God "Helper in Childbirth" (pictured below).

Prayers before the Icon of the Mother of God "Helper in Childbirth"

Troparion in Tone 4:

O Mother of our God, having conceived Christ the Giver of Life in thy womb, thou didst require no aid in His birth; therefore, bless and help thy servants to give birth easily, and—as a Mother—we pray thee, take under thy protection those infants about to be born at the appointed time; for thou art the Helper in Childbirth and the Protectress of thy servants.

Kontakion in Tone 2:

O consoler of Eve’s tears and fulfillment of the prophetic writings—thou who didst conceive the Divine Infant by the Holy Spirit and humbly gave birth to Him in the manger of Bethlehem—we flee to thee as the Guardian of women and infants; we sigh unto thee and magnify thee: Rejoice, O Compassionate Mother, Helper in Childbirth.

Prayer:

Accept, O Lady Theotokos, the tearful prayers of thy servants who hasten to thee. We behold thee, bearing in thy womb thy Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Though thou gavest birth to Him without pain, thou knowest a mother’s sorrows and see the infirmities of the sons and daughters of men. Therefore, fervently prostrating ourselves before thy healing image and kissing it with tender devotion, we pray to thee, O All-Merciful Lady: mercifully spare and compassionately protect us sinners—condemned to bear our children in pain and nurture them in sorrow—and deliver our infants, as well as those who gave birth to them, from grievous illness and bitter affliction. Grant them health and strength, that those who are nourished may grow from strength to strength, and those who nourish them may be filled with joy and consolation; so that even now, through thy intercession, the Lord may perfect His praise from the mouths of infants and nursing babes. Amen

Another Prayer:

O Mother of the Son of God! Have mercy upon the mothers among the sons of men and upon thy weak and suffering people: swiftly heal the illnesses that afflict us, assuage the sorrows and griefs that weigh upon us, and do not despise the tears and sighs of thy servants. Hear us in the day of affliction as we bow before thy icon, and in the day of joy and deliverance, accept the grateful praises of our hearts. Lift up our supplications to the Throne of thy Son and our God, that He may be merciful regarding our sins and infirmities and extend His mercy to those who call upon His name; so that we, and our children, may glorify thee—the Merciful Intercessor and faithful Hope of our race—forever and ever. Amen

Молитва:

Приими, Госпоже Богородительнице, слезная моления рабов Твоих, к Тебе притекающих. Зрим Тя на святей иконе во чреве носящую Сына Твоего и Бога нашего, Господа Иисуса Христа. Аще и безболезненно родила еси Его, обаче матерния скорби веси и немощи сынов и дщерей человеческих зриши. Темже тепле припадающе к цельбоносному образу Твоему и умиленно сей лобызающе, молим Тя, Всемилостивая Владычице: нас, грешных, осужденных в болезнех родити и в печалех питати чада наша, милостивно пощади и сострадательно заступи, младенцы же наша, такожде и родившия их, от тяжкаго недуга и горькия скорби избави; даруй им здравие и благомощие, да и питаемии от силы в силу возрастати будут, и питающия их исполнятся радостию и утешением, яко да и ныне предстательством Твоим из уст младенец и ссущих Господь совершит хвалу Свою. Ина молитва

O Мати Сына Божия! Умилосердися на матери сынов человеческих и на немощныя люди Твоя: постигающия нас болезни скоро исцели, належащия на нас скорби и печали утоли и не презри слез и воздыханий рабов Твоих. Услыши нас в день скорби, пред иконою Твоею припадающих, и в день радости и избавления приими благодарная хваления сердец наших. Вознеси мольбы наша ко Престолу Сына Твоего и Бога нашего, да милостив будет ко грехом и немощем нашим и пробавит милость Свою ведущим имя Его, яко да и мы, и чада наша, прославим Тя, Милосердную Заступницу и верную Надежду рода нашего, во веки веков. Аминь.
